The Agony Of Defeat

I FEEL YOUR PAIN
Let’s at least talk about “the pain.” There are numerous web sites, blogs, and internet “response mechanisms” which illustrate the horrific disgust and revulsion—even psychological trauma—endured by millions of Americans (and overseas sympathizers) afflicted by the re-election of President George W. Bush.
The
responses can be broken down into a variety of categories: (1) The
“Get-Mad-Get-Even Syndrome”—“They stole the election again—and we’re obligated
(for whatever reason) to expose the cheats for the liars and thieves they
really are—this could take some time”; (2) Superficial Depression—searching
for “what on earth went wrong” and blaming oneself for not trying harder or
not trying at all or watching everyone else try; (3) General Depression which
results in blaming the Democrats for running an elitist campaign; Ralph
Nader for being himself; and Jerry
Falwell for being a religious crackpot with a
whole lot of people who believe like he does; (4) Intense Depression
(different from “general”) causing one to literally vomit and search the net
for another English-speaking nation (e.g., Canada, Australia, South Africa,
Belize, etc.); and, (5) Absolute Depression—burning oneself in front of the
White House or learning to speak French (whichever comes first).
All the above are “super sized” when the depressed become aware how Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Bill O’Reilly, Charles Krauthammer, Mat Drudge, FOX News, George Will, NewsMax, Rush Limbaugh, Rupert Murdoch, Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingram + 90% of Talk Radio which is to the “right of Attila the Hun” are gloating over the current spat of “Moorish Malaise” (a political affliction stemming from documentaries from whence big bucks are made, but which have little or no impact in changing the electorate).
DON’T BE AMERICAN
Danny Dayus (from Ireland—a classic “Euro”), on the World Crisis Web—put together an article entitled “Don’t Be American”—and it got tons of responses from the “misery likes company” to the “suck-it-up and I-told you-so” crowd of hawks. I think a sample of the article and some of the responses might inform us “what is going on in the hearts and minds” of millions who feel terribly vulnerable just about now . . .
Dayus:
“After having watched with horror from my home in Ireland the electoral map of the United States of America turn blood red over the past nine hours, I feel it necessary to repeat Neil Kinnock’s warning to those across the Atlantic, only with the added warning: After this disaster for the world, I warn you not to be American.
“According to recent opinion polls, a majority of people in the USA actually believe that most of the world favored the re-election of George W. Bush as President - this despite several surveys that suggest that support for Kerry over Bush in the wider world was something between a 2:1 and 10:1 ratio. However, unless the President does something unexpected, like becoming a Christian, or starts believing in freedom and democracy over the next four years, I feel it safe to predict that after another term of George W Bush et al, Americans will be under no such illusion in 2008.
“But a majority of the people of the United States of America, whether they were unaware or just disdainful of the opinion of the largest number of people in agreement in world history, took no notice. Those people living on the periphery, and especially those who are unfortunate enough to be born on top of oil fields, and those living within striking distance of Ariel Sharon’s venomous ambition, will have to suffer and die for that neglect of our shared humanity.
“And, as everyone living through days of empire have learned, from the days of Nebuchadnezzar down to Adolf Hitler, those living on the fat of stolen land and resources are not to be trusted. There will always be those with the least to lose, those who have already seen family members sacrificed to the ‘might makes right’ ideology of the sword and the gun, those who have watched as their meager livelihoods have been taken away to feed the bloated appetites of foreigners. And these people will always be the first to die the martyr’s death.”
Now—check out responses to the article—which are altogether typical throughout, I believe, the general populous of the depressed:
THE FOURTH REICH
Comment from San Francisco, CA (wouldn’t you know it) . . .
“Yesterday was the last day of the Republic. Today is the first day of the Fourth Reich. America has finally revealed its true nature, the moral successor to Nazi Germany that tried to dominate the world and failed. There is no Soviet Union this time to prevent the success of the plan. I wonder whether there has been any improvement in Xyclon B in all this time? There are those who will warn me about writing and saying things against the Reich, but it doesn’t matter.
“They forget that along with summary judgment, warrantless searches, arrest without trial, deprivation of citizenship, denial of access to legal counsel and all the other new liberties Americans will enjoy, ex post facto prohibitions of the Constitution will no longer apply. I have already shown enough loathing for the current administration to have been condemned by them. Perhaps I should explain ex post facto, for the supporters of the new Reich certainly know less about Latin than they do about the Constitution. It simply means after the fact. An act cannot be determined to have been illegal if it was performed before a law was written against it. At least it used to be that way.
“Under the new Reich the Corporate Elite will flourish. They will now have legitimacy to plunder the treasure of the United States for their own enrichment. The resulting bankruptcy will permit them to say that Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and welfare were the cause of the financial crisis. These programs will disappear. This of course will create more homeless, and there will be camps built for them.
“Those who are not employed for the benefit of the community will have their pitiful possessions seized and will be offered ‘showers’ in order to maintain hygiene. From there the slaughter will start. Arabs, of course, will be on the list, for many of them practice Islam. Bushwinkle’s supporters know that there is only one true religion, and those who choose not to express it will be suspect. Then there is the matter of homosexuals. It goes without saying that they will not be permitted to marry or adopt. But the Reich will go further. Gays will be rounded up at the command of God, through his prophet and confidant, Bushwinkle, and thrown into the camps. Laws that support equal opportunities for gays will be declared void.”
THE EUROS JUST DON’T GET IT
The various levels of depression/contempt—countered by mutual contempt (e.g., “Do you liberals have a genetic defect—thank God for America and real people.”) are generating as much revulsion to the results of this election overseas (especially in Europe) as they are here in the USA. Reading the European press is like reading an apocalyptic novel entitled: THE DAY AFTER—When Civilization Ended!
But the Greco-Roman World—Western Civilization—is, once again, suffering from “cultural schizophrenia” – my last blog on this phenomenon (“Of Greeks and Romans”) alluded to the fact that the “Roman” side of our nature (here in America—certainly not in Europe) has, once again, won out over the “Greco-side” of our complexity. The fact of the matter is this—the secular, artsy, effeminate, contemplative, philosophical, narcissist, wishy-washy Greeks—along with their silly ideas about democracy and Republic—had better come to terms with absolute global terrorism and let us Romans handle this mess: It’s time we matched absolutes with absolutes—after all, we’re “staring into the face of Satan”—there won’t be any “Greco” left in “Greco-Roman” if we don’t take action NOW!
Yep, the Greeks are convinced that the Romans have lied, cheated, mis-informed, and hoodwinked the entire planet to accomplish their hegemonic goals of economic, military and political dominance; AND, to top it all off, are determined to turn the American Empire into a RELIGIOUS STATE bent on absolute values for all! Alas! PAX AMERICANA is possible, and you’re out there witnessing its revival!
DON’T THINK BABYLON’S ONLY SPIRITUAL!
Now, I know that a good many well-meaning brethren would like to forget “all of the above” and dissuade us all that believers simply must come to terms with: “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12) . . . that, yes, there are but two “spheres” of “spiritual reality” – the New Jerusalem—or Holy City; and Babylon the Great—that counterfeit “evil empire” that is the antithesis of the Holy City . . . furthermore, that any future mentioning in the Bible of a “Literal Babylon” has nothing to do with “fighting spiritual battles!”
Now—let me disabuse the “heavenly-minded” among us. The Bible is intensely clear about the prophetical consequences of our immediate future—here are some Bible verses which indicate “someone” WAS (or had been) in heaven and winds up on EARTH!
“The beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them . . . And war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him . . . and when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male Child . . . and the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus . . . Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time . . . it was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 11:7; 12:7-9, 13, 17; 12:12; 13:7-8).
Grant it, these verses are written in “apocalyptic style” – however, don’t exclude their “spiritual implications” from their tangible realities at the close of this age—for these things were written by John in the context of the “beast rising up out of the sea” (i.e., he had not risen as of John’s writing).
