…Damascus will cease from being a city.

1Back in October, 201l, I wrote (see below) an update on the “Oracle” or “Burden of Damascus” – which at the time turns out to be far more prophetic than I had surmised.   Re-reading the material I would have to say that it would be nigh impossible to stone the prophet!  The sad truth of the matter is that we were slightly off in our timing but not in the growing intensity leading up to the termination of the Arab-Israeli conflict now approaching its seventh and final phase.

So what’s changed?  Plenty.  For one, the Desolator of Damascus has terminated upwards of 35,000 of his fellow Syrians – Syrian has now plunged into full-blown Civil War.  Fascinating – Bashar Hafez al-Assad has exceeded the death count of his father, Hafez al-Assad.  There’s enough here to reconsider the possibilities of reincarnation!

We were wrong – instead of hanging Muammar Gaddafi, they shot him.  We were right, however, about Hosni Mubarak being ousted and the takeover by the Moslem Brotherhood, brainchild of Hamas.  Now, King of the South – Egypt, Sudan and the rest of North Africa (a.k.a. ancient Libya), along with the King of the North (at least Turkey – Iran will jump into the fray before long … for she is wholly engaged via Hamas, Hezbollah and now Syria) all are meeting to present a united Islamic Front in opposition to Israel’s “counter measures.”  By the time you read this outburst, the Arab-Israeli Conflict will have radically escalated with the invasion of Gaza, once again, to silence the hundreds of rockets being launched at Israel’s southern tier of cities – including Tel Aviv where three were killed by a “terror rocket” and also near Jerusalem a rocket landed.

Israel – another war she does not want – but Israel MAY now face … as before when she launched retaliatory intrusions into Gaza … a war, as well, on her northern border with Hezbollah in Lebanon.  The “Party of God” (how incongruous is this?) launching some of their 70,000 rockets aimed at Israel (Israel, meaning: Prince with God).

2“Last month (August, 2012), Hezbollah’s secretary general Hassan Nasrallah claimed his militant group possessed precision rockets capable of killing a number of Israeli targets, adding that using those rockets would turn ‘the lives of hundreds of thousands of Zionists to real hell,’ possibly leaving ‘hundreds of thousands dead.’” (Israel Claims 70,000 Hezbollah Rockets Aimed at It, Rana Mohammed Taha, Daily News, Egypt, September 11, 2012)

“Hezbollah and Lebanon’s Baath Party have called for the annihilation of Israel, blaming the Jewish state for spearheading a ‘conspiracy’ against the Syria-Iran-Hezbollah axis, Daily Star reports. In a joint statement, the two sides emphasized the need ‘to unify ranks in the face of the big conspiracy hatched against the resistance-rejectionist axis... The main enemy in Lebanon and the region is the Zionist entity and we must exert every effort and our energy to eradicate this arrogant entity,’ they said.” (What We Know About Hezbollah, Frimet and Arnold Roth, The Jewish Press, October 23, 2012)

King of the North and King of the South take aim…

“‘We will hold a joint press conference in Cairo to announce our stance regarding the attacks on Gaza,’ Erdogan said in a press statement.

“He went on to say that he planned to contact a number of world leaders, including his Russian and US counterparts, to discuss means of ending the Israeli assault, which has so far left 22 Palestinians dead – including a top Hamas commander – and scores seriously injured.

“‘There is no room for any communication between our government and Israel,’ added Erdogan.

“Political tensions between Ankara and Tel Aviv erupted in mid-2010 following an Israeli attack on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that left nine Turkish activists dead.” (Ref. see below)

Apparently, Erdogan and Morsi feel the same:

“Mr. Erdogan told journalists in Istanbul that he would be convening a joint press conference with President Morsi in Cairo to announce their joint position. He added, ‘We will defend Gaza whatever it costs us.’” (Erdogan:  Egypt and Turkey will defend Gaza whatever the price, MEM, Middle East Monitor, 16 November 2012)

Indeed, Islamic bluster – especially when it comes to Israel – has become an art form.

By the time PM Erdogan gathers his thoughts in Cairo, he and his Moslem Brotherhood counterpart, will have uttered their own plethora of expletives toward Israel’s immediate self-defense-style invasion of Gaza – our unfortunate guesstimations are that the immediate 30 dead Palestinians will reach upwards of 2,000 fatalities with 20-30 Israelis killed…this would be a reasonable conjecture, given similar losses during the war known as Operation Cast Lead in 2008-2009(מבצע עופרת יצוקה‎) (Note:  1,166 and 1,417 Palestinian and 13 Israeli deaths).

But what this will do is solidify the growing accord between Sunni Islamic states to the north (Turkey) and the south (Egypt) of Israel; and, there is no assurance that the 70,000 rockets will not be unleashed to Israel’s north with Syria at the ready to deflect attention from her Civil War.  Moreover, we could easily project that Bashar al-Assad might fancy an all-out war with Israel the best remedy for his precarious position…it will, however, simply be a fabricated “spill over” gone wild having Iranian, Russian and Chinese backing as some bizarre self-defense effort on Syria’s part; and, naturally, Iran would be delighted for such a demonstration of Arab anarchy.

Egypt and Turkey, meanwhile, will rattle their sabers but will not – at this time – engage Israel in that their alliances with the USA and NATO are too geopolitically onerous … the time is not ripe (yet) for the Gog-Magog War which will ensue shortly after Israel’s Defense Pact with the Willful King is signed, sealed and delivered.  This “covenant of understanding” will guarantee Israel’s security in that she will, in accordance with Isaiah 17, be altogether predisposed to accept this plausible accord known as “Your Covenant with Death; Your Agreement with Hell” (Isaiah 28:15, 18)…this will be the commencement of the Seventieth Week of Daniel’s “end of days” prophecy concerning “Your people and your Holy City” (Daniel 9:24).

The infamous “Treaty with Death and Hell” will be signed as a result of the “face of Jacob shall wane” (Isaiah 17 - secular Zionism will have been bankrupted as a result of the  seventh and final phase of the Arab-Israeli Conflict known as the “Oracle of Damascus.”).

4Yes, “if another comes in his own name, him you will receive” (John 5:43) – even so, the Antichrist – the Anti-messiah – will have arrived as the great protector of Israel – he will be the leader of the Western World – the “Ships of Tarshish” – the world’s great commercial trading empire will suffice the accord in collaboration with her trading partners in the Middle East who occupy the ancient lands of Sheba and Dedan (the Saudi Arabian Peninsula states).

Evangelical prophetic buffs who have the spurious notion that Antichrist will be some Turkish-Iranian-Assyrian-Islamic-Middle Eastern leader (even a Jewish leader) are so off the mark that it would be laughable, if they weren’t serious about their fabricated tales – tales wholly in counter distinction to eschatological truth taken from Daniel 7-8 – “Suddenly the male goat (viz., Alexander the Great) CAME FROM THE WEST…and out of one of them (the four Grecian horns) came a younger horn (i.e., the future personification of the Antichrist with “younger” connoting the leader of a power “younger in age” (not “little”) than the other horns) which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Glorious Land.  And it grew up to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the ground, and trampled them (Note:  This adumbration commencing with Antiochus IV Epiphanes has obviously had a cosmic morphing into the Latter-Days’ Antichrist) (Daniel 8:5, 9).  Likewise, as the “Eleventh Horn” in Daniel 7:6-8, he clearly is “sourced” in the “fourth beast” who proceeds in sequence from the Grecian beast (the leopard) and that Fourth Beast is most assuredly the Roman Empire which subdued the splintered Grecian cluster of horns/authorities – and this is most certainly FURTHER WEST than Greece!

Lastly, in the Gog-Magog conflagration (Note:  Not the Oracle of Damascus) those contesting the intentions of the King of the North (headed up by the Turkey-Iran Alliance) and the King of the South (headed up by the Egyptian, North African (ancient Libya) and Sudanese alliance – see Daniel 11:40-45) – that intrusion is confronted by the Western Trading Alliance known as the SHIPS OF TARSHISH (ancient Phoenician Commercial Trading Empire – whose efforts were ever-westward unto the Iberian Peninsula and beyond to the New World) (Please see:  Ezekiel 38:13).   The nations of the Saudi Arabian Peninsula (Sheba and Dedan) are united with the West against Gog-Magog/King of the North/South.  I find it altogether plausible that Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the Gulf States are wholly in opposition to Bashar al-Assad.  “Commercial interests” will take precedence over Islamic Caliphate endeavors.  Islamic religious schemes are designed to justify Turkish-Iranian/Egyptian/North African/Sudanese intrusions against Israel.  They will be viewed by Sheba and Dedan, along with the Ships of Tarshish, as naught but a foil to justify their real intent:  The ultimate seizing of the treasures beneath the soils of the Middle East!

Oh, and by the way, Russia plays a bit part at this stage (both in the Oracle of Damascus and in the Gog-Magog War) – much to the patriotic chagrin of my American counterparts, so absorbed are they in fighting the Cold War, when in point of glaring econo-political fact the Socialists have taken over right in our own backyard without firing a shot … we’ll see who can “out-socialize” the Russians!).  If Gog-Magog is so wiped out as Ezekiel 38-39 suggests (taking 210 days to bury the radiated dead) – then, pray tell, what’s this business after the crushing blow that Antichrist levels against the Kings of the North and South (a.k.a. Gog-Magog) that he suddenly hears of “news from the east (China?) and north (Russia – for she’s all that could be left of the “north”) shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many” (Daniel 11:44)?  Astounding, the hapless Russians take it in the shorts one more time!

There is absolutely no way to explain Daniel 11:40-45 without these aforementioned considerations – it is the same war witnessed in Ezekiel 38 and portions of 39; the only difference is that Israel is the target of Gog-Magog in Ezekiel and Antichrist is the target of the Kings of the North/South in Daniel 11:40-43.  (Please see:  Russia has a Cameo Appearance in the Gog-Magog War)

A Ruinous Heap

The beautiful city of Damascus – for it truly is a sight to behold – has commenced its demise in ever-increasing strife which will not suffice any peace agreement.  The lines have been drawn in the sand between the belligerents.  No, we did not calculate the horrendous consequences of the Civil War being waged with every fiber of Assad’s being…he is literally fighting for his life…but so is Hezbollah, for they have thrown in their lot with Assad; therefore, Iran has everything to lose if Syrian is taken out…and so does Hamas, for she is but a surrogate of Iran.  There’s just too much to lose if Syria goes down.

How anxious are the nations of the Saudi Arabian Peninsula – including the Gulf States but especially Saudi Arabia, Jordan and even Iraq, to see Syria meet her fate…though the mercurial PM Maliki’s allegiance to Iran – for he is their toady – seeks to provide generous cover for Iran’s efforts to supply troops and weapons through and over Iraq’s land and air space.

Iran has been using civilian aircraft to fly military personnel and large quantities of weapons across Iraqi airspace to Syria to aid President Bashar al-Assad in his attempt to crush an 18-month uprising against his government, according to a Western intelligence report seen by Reuters.

“‘It also flies in the face of declarations by Iraqi officials,’ it said. ‘Planes are flying from Iran to Syria via Iraq on an almost daily basis, carrying IRGC (Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps) personnel and tens of tons of weapons to arm the Syrian security forces and militias fighting against the rebels.’” (Reuters, Louis Charbonneau, Sept. 19, 2012)

Yep – so much for American powers of persuasion having much of an impact upon the corrupt regime of PM Maliki – a man we’ve kept at the helm of perhaps one of the most corrupt regime’s on earth…ranking FOURTH in the world, after last’s year’s abysmal “FIFTH PLACE” showing (they’re getting worse) and only chaotic Somalia, Myanmar and that bozo republic of Afghanistan is more corrupt than Iraq.

Incidentally, I had some well-meaning folks before all hell broke out in Syria who were very angry with me regarding my “misinterpretation regarding the demise of Damascus” – sorry, blame God!

Israel will silence Hamas – but it will be an extraordinarily costly intervention.  The Islamic world will be united, as always, in their rabid condemnation of Israeli apartheid in that the “Jewish State” is by definition as religiously racist (though it is not meant to be) in tone as the would-be Islamic Caliphate … the dream of PM Erdogan and the Mullahs of Iran (what a team they make!) – but, then again, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” (even if that friend is my enemy, sort of).

Israel’s “semblance” of notifying the West – viz., telling President Obama what she plans to do in spite of America’s “I guess I have your back – yuh think?” has little choice in the matter.  It’s just that the “situation” will unravel faster than Whirling Dervishes swirling in circles.

Israel’s immediate foes, again, involved in the Oracle of Damascus are:  Gaza (Hamas); Lebanon (Hezbollah); the Palestinian Authority known as the “Fortress of Ephraim” now domiciled in Ramallah; and, of course, Syria – Damascus.

How will this “ruinous heap” occur?  Will it be through her own Civil Strife?  Perhaps through a catastrophic chemical arsenal release confirming where Saddam Hussein’s “chemical weapons of mass destruction” were transferred – things will simply get “out of hand” notwithstanding the West’s stern warnings to the contrary.  Or, forbid, she becomes the recipient of Israel’s Samson Complex wherein the “nuclear option” (tactical nuclear weapons) are reluctantly utilized due to a conflagration of rockets raining down of Israel’s urban cores – who knows, in the “fog of war” a couple just might land on the Dome of the Rock!

When will this happen?  Grief, it’s happening NOW!  Yet, most of the American Church is fast asleep wondering one of several things:  (1) What was General Petraeus thinking?  (2)  If Europe’s in Recession – when will they take us down?  (3) How soon should I get out of the stock market? – Since it’s going to collapse in any event; (4) Why are people shopping at the mall so much when this whole house of cards is comin’ down in any event?

Other inane considerations notwithstanding – we seem to think that what’s going on across the pond has little daily impact upon our own existence here.  Sadly, as Dene McGriff has said, some 1.5 quadrillion in derivatives has got the whole earth playing a bizarre form of Russian roulette – only thing is this six shooter has five rounds in her chambers with only one bailout left, and that’s iffy.  May the Lord have mercy on us all as these incredibly accurate prophetic events unfold in our time.

A Refresher Course on the Coming Burden of Damascus – November, 2012

Doug Krieger

“The burden against Damascus…

‘Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city, and it will be a ruinous heap.’”

(Isaiah 17:1)

Handling the “prophetic truth” is not for pundits suffering from editorial gastroenteritis – it is what it is, and, if you can’t stomach it, you may kindly leave the heat of the kitchen.  Oh, and by the way…don’t kill the messenger (although, according to rabbinic tradition, Isaiah eventually was royally slain having been “sawn asunder” hiding inside a cedar tree from the evil king Manasseh – utter poetic injustice!).

But what other injustices we now witness within the beautiful city of Damascus apparently founded by the sons of Noah who got into a squabble about naming the world’s oldest city wherein “the blood of Mash, the fourth son of Aram Bin Sam Bin Noah, flowed soon after a heavy blow by his brother Aws deeply cut Mash’s head” – hence the meaning of Damascus A town built on the rock where the blood of Mash flowed?

Thus, the bloody beginning of earth’s oldest urban habitat appears prophetically destined to replicate her torrid commencement over something utterly mundane as in “what’s in a name?”

Now – injustices?  Indeed…nearly 3,000 lives (fast approaching 9/11 renown, along with 10,000 arrests…and you don’t wish to be arrested in Syria, by the way) have been sacrificed upon the altar of Syria’s Arab Spring and there seems little abatement to the slaughter by the entrenched despot, President Bashar al-Assad.  After China and Russia (imagine that?) vetoed UN Security Council efforts to impose additional sanctions on the Syrian optometrist, NATO decided to ramp up the pressure to squeeze Assad all the more in giving vent to “democratic forces.”

Doing the communicative honors regarding the cost to his Excellency in killing his own people were the newly-invigorated Ottoman Turks who, of late, have been heralded as the guardians of the old Caliphate – who could perhaps inspire a new Islamic amalgamation but with a more up-to-date rendition, expressing tempered socio-religious fervor with a tinge of economic savvy…a sort of Putin-style Eurasian Union (just what the Turks really want with their old adversary):

Syrian President Bashar Assad on Tuesday (October 4, 2011) threatened to set fire to the Middle East, and especially to Israel, if NATO attacks Syria, the Iranian Fars news agency reported.

“In meeting with Turkish FM, Syrian president discusses possibility of NATO strike, says ‘If a crazy measure is taken against Damascus, I won’t need more than six hours to transfer hundreds of rockets to Golan to fire at Tel Aviv.’  Syrian President Bashar Assad on Tuesday threatened to set fire to the Middle East, and especially to Israel, if NATO attacks Syria, the Iranian Fars news agency reported. In a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.  Davutoglu reportedly conveyed a message of warning from the US to Assad. The Iranian report has not been verified by other sources.

“According to the Fars news agency, the Syrian president stressed that Damascus will also call on Hezbollah in Lebanon to launch a fierce rocket and missile attack on Israel, one that Israeli intelligence could never imagine. ‘All these events will happen in three hours, but in the second three hours, Iran will attack US warships in the Persian Gulf as American and European interests will be targeted.’” (Assad threatens to attack Tel Aviv in case of NATO strike, Israel News, 10-04-11).

Kind of adds a new dimension to giving the Golan back to the Syrians, doesn’t it?  Oh, and by the way, “Two Blows for Each Blow” was once said by Bashar’s dictatorial father, Hafez Assad when a similar crisis faced him – like father, like son?

“We are stronger than any pressures or threats and confident we can foil all Zionist-imperialist plots and deal two blows for each blow to anyone who tries to harm Syria.” (Assad Vows Reprisals Against Countries That Impose Curbs on Syria, AP, November 8, 1986)

“. . . the London-based al-Sharq al-Awsat Arabic-language newspaper reported Tuesday that mass demonstrations had been held in all of Syria’s principal cities Monday, in support of an announcement by the rebel Syrian National Council [My note:  Eerily similar in sound to its Libyan NATO-supported counterpart: Libya National Transitional Council] that it was setting up a shadow government in Istanbul, that would be ready to move into power as soon as Assad fell.

“During a protest in Damascus, a statue of former Syrian leader Hafez al-Assad was destroyed by a crowd of demonstrators – the first time this has happened in Damascus, the report said.” (Assad Threatens Israel, US if NATO Attacks, David Lev, 10-04-2011, Israel National News)

“In Syria, some 75 opposition figures, headed by prominent dissident Hassan Abdul-Azim, held a rare public meeting near the capital Damascus and called for the downfall of the regime.” (Syrian Troops Pursue Defectors in North, 7 Killed, Zeina Karam, October 6, 2011, Associated Press)

“For the past three months, Syrian President Bashar Assad has staved off a military attack by Turkey or NATO for halting the exceptional brutality of his crackdown on protest by explicitly holding Greater Tel Aviv's 1.2 million inhabitants under threat of missile retaliation. Iran and Hezbollah are exercising the same deterrent. This standoff was the main theme of the talks US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta held with Israeli leaders in Tel Aviv Monday, Oct. 3. According to Western intelligence sources, Syria, Iran and Hezbollah have charted a coordinated military operation for flattening metropolitan Tel Aviv, Israel's financial, industrial and cultural center, with thousands of missiles launched simultaneously by all three - plus the Palestinian Hamas and Jihad Islamic firing from the Gaza Strip.” (Turkey mobilizing 39th mechanized infantry brigade, reserve soldiers – Assad threatens to attack Tel Aviv in case of NATO strike, Godlike Products).

The growing frustration Bashar al-Assad faces from a far more organized and NATO-Euro-supported opposition to his rule can only increase – and quickly so.  Turkey is ramping up its influence in the region and is playing the NATO card to the hilt, having gained credible recognition of pan-Islamic leadership from its support of the Arab Spring in North Africa.  Meanwhile the Palestinian Authority, under the highly-motivated leadership of President Mahmoud Abbas continues to press for Euro-recognition of PA Statehood; thus, diplomatic maneuvering is unwavering – all of which bodes ill for Israel in many ways.

For one, as the cat is squeezed into the corner he’ll become rancorous and could easily pull the tripwire – igniting the final stage of the current six-phased Arab-Israeli Conflict (1948, 1957, 1967, 1973 [incidentally the Yom Kippur War commenced on October 6, 1973 – today’s date], 1982, and 2006.  Israel has no intention of standing by and watching gazillions of rockets land on their cities and villages – not by a long shot – she will be pro-active and in “full survival mode.”

The “decision” has been made – al-Assad must go!  Now begins the embattlement in earnest.  The fate of Arab dictators is not a good one – our last several articles on these matters predicted Moamar Gaddafi’s demise and the downfall/uncertainty in its wake (Chaos Leading to War and Peace – Chapter 18 of the False Prophet and Blood and Fire…of Kings, Oil, Iraq and the West, Chapter 20, the False Prophet).

Gaddafi, much like his predecessor, Saddam Hussein, is now running from his people like a fox hounded by mad dogs seeking revenge upon their former master – the question:  Will he be found cowering in some silly bunker, hands held high, only to be despicably hung in similar fashion?  And, what of others like Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and Ben Ali of Tunisia and their counterparts pending exodus from Yemen and elsewhere?

But when it comes to ‘ole Bashar al-Assad you have a horse of a different color, and it’s hardly white.  Consider 3,000 killed and counting – why his father wiped out 10,000 in one stroke in February, 1982, known as the Hama Massacre ending the attempts by the Moslem Brotherhood to wrist power from Hafez al-Assad.  Yet, today it’s different – there’s the political will to resist such dictators and what’s happening in Syria has happened (insofar as “throwing out the bums”) in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and is either happening or going to happen elsewhere as in Yemen.  Furthermore, NATO – especially when it comes to Syria – is out to play a dominate role in ousting the current dictator.

Israel’s buying her time – but time is NOT on her side.  The final act is about to play out on the Arab-Israeli Conflict…it will not be pretty.  I’ve included the entire article from CONSERVAPEDIA on the Oracle of Damascus – also known as the BURDEN OF DAMASCUS.  The Scriptures are not silent regarding “the end of the war” mentioned in Daniel 9:26.  This is a fair and fascinating read and brings one fairly current on the dynamics of the final phase of the Arab-Israel Conflict.

Below:  This article is copied from CONSERVAPEDIA for your viewing – since this is an “on-line encyclopedia” its contents may change; however, as of this writing (10-06-2011) the contents are shown “as is.”  (Note:  Minor formatting changes have been made to conform with the Tribnet’s configurations.)

Oracle of Damascus

Evangelical Futurism (Christian eschatology) and the Oracle of Damascus (taken from Conservapedia – written by Doug Krieger)

8The “Oracle of Damascus” or “Burden of Damascus” is recorded in Isaiah 17:1-14, as well as in associated passages found in Zechariah 9:1-8 and Jeremiah 49:23-27. These Bible passages – and some say Amos 1:3-5 – are considered prophetic by most Evangelical Christians who embrace Futurism (Christian eschatology). Furthermore, some Futurists[1]   consider Psalm 83 as an allusion to Israel’s immediate neighbors conspiring to destroy Israel as a “Latter Day’s” phenomenon. These Futurists claim that the Bible says modern-day Damascus will finally come to a quick, devastating and permanent end. They see the opening of Isaiah 17:1 in no uncertain terms to mean the utter destruction by the world’s oldest, continually-inhabited city[2] - an event heretofore which has never been fulfilled, therefore, it still must be considered a prophecy yet future:

“Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city, and it will be a ruinous heap” (Isaiah 17:1)

The devastation of Damascus will be caused by the future State of Israel as a result of the Samson Option in response to her very survival. Isaiah 17:9 states:

“In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth. And all will be desolation.”

They say the Bible even tells how quickly and the precise time of this destruction upon Damascus:

“In the evening, sudden terror! Before the morning, they are gone!” (Isaiah 17:14).

They also claim that Jeremiah 49:23-27; especially, verses 26 and 27, substantiate this claim upon Syria’s capital:

“‘Surely, her young men will fall in the streets; all her soldiers will be silenced in that day,‘ declares the LORD Almighty. ‘I will set fire to the walls of Damascus; it will consume the fortresses of Ben-Hadad.’”

Nathan Jones[3] of the Lamb and Lion Ministries Blog – (the Evangelical Premillennial ministry of David Reagan) suggests that an Israeli “nuclear warhead” will spell the demise of Damascus. Jones cites Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in his remarks as indicative of Israel’s ultimate quest for survival wherein Israel “would not hold back” if renewed attacks by Hezbollah were to inflict Israel once again (See: 2006 Lebanon War).

There will no longer be a situation of distant fighting, where major cities continue with life as usual. The war will reach the cities and homes of Israeli citizens and our enemy's objective will be to target the home front . . . we will be forced to bring an end to hostilities quickly, at the smallest possible cost, using our comparative advantage (which will be) massive capabilities and tools during the Second Lebanon War that it refrained from using, because it was fighting a terror organization, not a state. (“Olmert: No holding back against Hezbollah”[4] by Roni Sofer, YNetNews, Aug. 19, 2008)

Jones suggests that Russia’s recent incursion into Georgia (See: 2008 South Ossetia War) foretells the lead-up to another yet future conflict, the Gog Magog War in which Russia allied with Iran (Persia) will descend upon the mountains of Israel in the End Times (Ezekiel 38-39); therefore,

As the Middle East heats up with Russian on the move and the current (April, 2009) Iranian President’s rhetoric against Israel, the players are all playing and positioning themselves for a possible prophetic scenario. The consequence of this will put Israel in a very precarious position; with their back against the wall, Israel may use their nukes and fulfill the ‘Damascus’ prophecy found in Isaiah and Jeremiah. (“The Prophetic End of Damascus"[5] Lamb and Lion Ministries, August 19, 2008)

Premillenarian Ray Stedman (formerly of Peninsula Bible Church of Palo Alto, CA) affirms:

9Two verses in Chapter 17 (Isaiah 17:1-2) describe the future of Damascus, a city much in the news today. That has not yet been fulfilled. The infallible Word of God says that Damascus, a large and very old city, ultimately will be destroyed. We are not told how or when this will happen but it will happen, as the Word of God declares. (“Why Do the Nations Rage”[6] – Ray Stedman, the PBC Library)

Dave Dolan,[7] a Jerusalem-based author and journalist, in his text, “Israel in Crisis: What Lies Ahead?"[8] affirms the Futurist nature of the Oracle of Damascus (pp. 83-84). Dolan’s editorial updates from the Middle East confirm his persistent suspicions that the “Burden of Damascus” is imminent:

Widespread media reports of possible imminent war with Syria—probably initiated by an attack upon Israel by its puppet Hezbollah militia force in Lebanon, supported by Palestinian Hamas fighters in the Gaza Strip, and possibly by Iran itself—have increased significantly in recent days here in Israel. Military analysts say this indicates something is indeed occurring on the ground to raise the war alert, as confirmed by army sources. (“War Jitters Rock Israel"[9]DDolan.com - Israel Update – Jerusalem, April 3, 2008)

The Distinction between the Oracle of Damascus and the Gog Magog War

Some within the Futurism (Christian eschatology) camp distinguish between the Oracle of Damascus and the Gog-Magog War of Ezekiel 38-39. Again, Dave Dolan makes this distinction between the Gog-Magog War and the Oracle of Damascus:

The big news here in Israel today, boldly headlined in the nation’s largest newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, this morning, is Russia’s reported return to two naval bases that the Kremlin largely built and once controlled in neighboring Syria. The move is said to be part of a large Russian weapons deal with Syria, at least partially funded by Iran, as I reported about in last week’s monthly news update.

The dramatic Russian move will undoubtedly increase speculation among observant Christians and Jews that Ezekiel’s Gog and Magog invasion is drawing very near. In light of author Joel Rosenberg’s[10] popular novel about the theme, I get asked about this prophecy all the time now as I travel around the world, and especially if I see its fulfillment as possibly imminent.

Frankly I do NOT see Ezekiel’s penultimate prophesied event as taking place in the near-term future. Instead, I suspect that the region could well witness an apparent massive clash between Syria and Israel, described in Isaiah chapter 17, unfolds in the not too distant future, to which Russia and other countries listed by Ezekiel would eventually react, but not immediately in the climactic way described by Ezekiel. (Dave Dolan, The Isaiah 17 War against Syria/Jordan Comes Before Gog and Magog in Ezek. 38, Global Resource Ministries International Israel Update, August 06, 2007, as found on Philip’s Zionist Blog[11])

Futurist Hal Lindsey also projects a separate conflict involving Syria which is not connected to the future Gog-Magog conflict:

All of this (i.e., the current Syrophoenicia War in the Levant (See 2006 Lebanon War and Syro-Palestinian archaeology)) leads me to believe that Damascus will be destroyed before the Tribulation begins. I believe that Damascus is about to so threaten Israel’s existence by either launching or furnishing bio-chemical weapons or radioactive dirty bombs, that Israel will nuke them. Israel has sworn that it will implement the Samson Option against any nation that attacks them with any form of weapons of mass destruction. That means a thermonuclear strike. This may soon happen to Syria. (Hal Lindsey Oracle –Politically Incorrect – Prophetically Correct – 7/31/2006)

Lindsey continues:

What is most important is that all this is setting up Ezekiel’s 2600-year-old prophecy in Ezekiel 38. Persia, or modern Iran, is listed a chief among the Muslim nations Russia will lead into an all-out assault against Israel. This is predicted to be the first battle of the war of Armageddon. The one nation that does not seem to be listed is Syria. I believe this is because as a result of actions it is now taking against Israel, Isaiah’s prophecy about Damascus in the last days is going to be soon fulfilled. Twenty Seven hundred years ago, Isaiah warned, “An oracle concerning Damascus: ‘See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins … In that day the glory of Jacob will fade; the fat of his body will waste away.’ (Isaiah 17:1-4) To establish the time of this event, look at these factors.

First, Damascus is one of the oldest continuously populated cities on earth. It has never been totally destroyed – yet. Second, it is in a context of events that lead up to the catastrophes that precede the Lord Jesus’ Second Coming. Third, it is far enough away from that event that Jacob (Israel) is enduring terrible circumstances. Fourth, Syria and the tribal name of its forefathers are not mentioned in the Russian led Muslim Confederacy that launches Armageddon in the middle of the Tribulation. Three Prophetic Wars

In his Prophetic Sequence:[13]Trident Wars;[14]Damascus Will Cease from being a City;[15] and Israel’s War,[16]blogger Doug Krieger of the Tribulation Network,[17] distinguishes three prophetic wars[18] to occur in ever-widening circles around Israel. The three are: The Oracle of Damascus (which Krieger claims will occur prior to the Prophecy of Seventy Weeks at the end of days (Daniel 9:24-27) and before the infamous “Treaty of Death and Hell” (Isaiah 28:15 and Isaiah 28:18) or “Covenant with the Many”- i.e., the “majority of Israel” (Daniel 9:27) which will be made by the Antichrist with Israel; the Gog Magog War of Ezekiel 38:1-23; Ezekiel 39:1-16; and Daniel 11:40-43 which will occur during the first 40 days of the Prophecy of Seventy Weeks; and, finally: “The Campaign of Armageddon” (See Armageddon Dwight Pentecost of Dallas Seminary and Dispensationalism) which Krieger asserts will persist throughout the remainder the Prophecy of Seventy Weeks until the Second Coming of Christ at the conclusion of the 1290 days of desolations (Daniel 12:11) – beginning in Daniel 11:44-45 and concluding in Daniel 12:12 with the climax occurring at the so-called “Battle of Armageddon” (Citing: Ezekiel 39:17-20; Joel 2:30-32; Joel 3:1-17; Revelation 16:12-16; Revelation 19:11-21). (Please See: Abomination of Desolation)

Krieger sees the modern states of Syria (“Damascus” or the “land of Hadrach” and “Hamath” – Zechariah 9:1-2; or “Damascus, Syria” and the “cities of Aroer” – Isaiah 17:1-3) -, Lebanon (“Tyre and Sidon” – Zechariah 9:2-4); the Palestinian entities of Gaza (Zechariah 9:5-7); and the West Bank (i.e., “the stronghold or fortress of Ephraim” –Isaiah 17:3) conspiring against Israel as a four-fold agitation leading towards the very Oracle of Damascus itself and that the “end of the war” mentioned in Daniel 9:26 prior to the covenant made by the Antichrist in Daniel 9:27 is the current Arab-Israeli Conflict which started in 1948 and will persist to the conclusion of the Burden of Damascus. Krieger claims that the Oracle of Damascus occurs in Zechariah 9 as the “grand opening” of the “Messianic Scenario” which stretches from Zechariah 9 through the end of Zechariah 14—i.e., the final “countdown” to the Messianic Age starts at the Oracle of Damascus and continues throughout the Prophecy of Seventy Weeks and results in the defeat of the Antichrist-Beast and the triumph of the saints (Daniel 7:27) with Messiah and the commencement of the Messianic Age.

Furthermore, he states that Israel’s defeat of the constellation of nations allied against her at the Oracle of Damascus will result in what he calls the “bankruptcy of secular Zionism” vis-à-vis “Biblical Zionism”[19] (Isaiah 17:4: “In that day it shall come to pass that the glory of Jacob will fade, and the fatness of his flesh grow lean”). This will result in the building of the Third Temple under the orchestrated false peace of “the Coming Prince” (Daniel 9:26-27) (See: Sir Robert Anderson and “The Coming Prince”[20]). What distinguishes, according to Krieger, the Oracle of Damascus from the Gog-Magog conflagration are the constellation of nations mentioned and/or omitted in the Bible passages of these two conflicts—let alone their dissimilarities juxtaposed to the Armageddon Campaign. They are not the same prophetic conflicts because the nations and/or peoples mentioned allied against Israel are dissimilar.

Oracle of Damascus

Israel vs. Syria/Damascus, Lebanon (Hezbollah), Gaza (Hamas) and the Palestinian Authority

The “Tyre and Sidon” or Lebanon would, under Krieger’s scenario, be galvanized against Israel through Hezbollah and the Palestinian entities of Gaza (Hamas) and the “Stronghold of Ephraim” would constitute today's Palestinian Authority.

Gog-Magog War

Israel vs. Gog, the land of Magog, Rosh – the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal (Ezekiel 38:1-3) Persia, Cush or Ethiopia, and Put or Libya (Ezekiel 38:5; and Daniel 11:43), Egypt (Daniel 11:42-43) Gomer, Togarmah (Ezekiel 38:6)

Krieger asserts that Gog is a chief spiritual “principality” against Israel and that Meshech, Tubal, Gomer and Togarmah constitute peoples populating the modern state of Turkey; whereas they, together with Persia, are allied as the “king of the North” in Daniel 11:40 and that the “king of the South” (Daniel 11:40) is comprised of the modern states of Egypt, Libya and Sudan (ancient Ethiopia – not the Cush of the Levant or of ancient Assyria) - all allied against Antichrist. Those allied with Israel in the Gog-Magog conflict are the modern states of the Saudi Arabian Peninsula (Sheba and Dedan – Ezekiel 38:13) and the West (i.e., “the merchants of Tarshish” headed up by the United States of America” – the leader of the West. Finally, Krieger conjectures, that whereas the center of the conflict in Ezekiel is Israel, the center of the conflict in Daniel 11:40-43 is Antichrist who is allied with Israel—the same conflict.

Armageddon or “Battle of Armageddon” or “Campaign of Armageddon”

Antichrist vs. “News from the East” (i.e., Antichrist vs. Asia) and “the North” (i.e., Antichrist vs. Russia) – culminating in world war and ultimately involving all the nations of the earth climaxing their struggle at Mount Megiddo in Northern Israel (Armageddon – Revelation 16:16) with the finale taking place at the Valley of Jehoshaphat (near Jerusalem - Joel 3:2-12), resulting in the miraculous intervention of the Messiah whom the Christians believe is Jesus Christ and whom the Orthodox Jews affirm to be their final deliverer.

Finally, Paul Robertson, in “Damascus Will No Longer Be a City”[21] (Apocalypse Soon, the Xcellent Files) distinguishes the Oracle of Damascus from the Gog-Magog War:

Isaiah's clues indicate that the multinational attack that follows the destruction of Damascus is the Gog/Magog war of Ezekiel 38-39.

Criticism of the Futurist Interpretation of the “Oracle of Damascus”

In “The Rejection of Pascal’s Wagner – A Skeptic’s Guide to Christianity” in the section dealing with “Isaiah’s Failed Prophecies”[22] it states:

In a similar vein, Isaiah predicted the complete and utter destruction of Damascus (Isaiah 17:1-2) An oracle concerning Damascus. See, "Damascus will cease to be a city, and will become a heap of ruins. Her towns will be deserted forever...." As we noted above, it is now almost three millennia since that prophecy and Damascus remains a vibrant city to this day. While Damascus had been overran many times in its past, it is still around. Thus the prophecy that says Damascus will cease to be a city forever is obviously false. (Callahan, Bible Prophecy: p60)

Michael David Magee in “Prophecies of the Messiah”[23] refutes the claims of the Oracle of Damascus as mere ancient Israelite jealousies of surrounding and more powerful nations or Christian fantasies:

Many events have happened in every country, anticipated by studious people, as the result of natural causes such as the ravages and downfall of cities and the overthrow of empires. Jewish prophets were angry because more powerful nations had overpowered Israel and held the Israelites in subjection. They felt that God must eventually right these wrongs to His chosen people and were always prophesying against the conquering nations like Egypt, Assyria and Babylonia. Naturally this was in reality just wishful thinking and many of the prophecies never happened. Babylon, Tyre, Damascus, and other cities belonging to those hostile neighbors the Jews so much envied and execrated, were not destroyed and indeed survive to this day.

The prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, all poured out thunders upon Damascus. Isaiah declared it should be a “ruinous heap” (Isaiah 17:1). Jeremiah predicted its destruction by fire (Jeremiah 49:27). Damascus still stands, with a large population. It has suffered less by ravages of war and the scythe of time than almost any other city of the east. It has stood over three thousand years without becoming anything like a “ruinous heap".

The Old Testament prophecies against Tyre and Egypt are failed prophecies. Ezekiel prophesied that Nebuchadnezzar would completely destroy Tyre and that it would never be found again (Ezek 26:7-14, 21; 27:36; 28:19), but two hundred and fifty years after Nebuchadnezzar’s time Alexander had to siege it into submission, having found it a strong commercial city. It still is. Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed only the parts of Tyre that were accessible—on the mainland—his siege of the island acropolis failing. St. Jerome, of the fourth century, declared Tyre to be, then, the finest city of Phoenicia and was astonished that Ezekiel’s prophecy had so utterly failed.

Others conclude that the Oracle of Damascus has been fulfilled:

The passage Isaiah 17:1-11 is an oracle concerning Damascus and North Israel, in which Isaiah predicts the fate of the two allies--Syria and Ephraim--in the Syro-Ephraimitic war of 734 BC, with a promise that only a scanty remnant will survive (Isaiah 17:6). In Isaiah 17:12-14, the prophet boldly announces the complete annihilation of Judah's unnamed foes--the Assyrians. (See: Next Bible[24])

The late Premillenial Evangelical John Walvoord of Dallas Theological Seminary (Dallas, Texas) believed that the Prophecy against Damascus was “fulfilled in history and prophecy” (i.e., there is no future fulfillment):

Isaiah 17:1-8. The coming destruction of Damascus, one of the ancient cities of the Middle East, the capital city of Aram, was predicted (Isaiah 17:1-2). Damascus was allied with Israel in fighting the Assyrians, but it would all be to no avail because the Assyrians would triumph. Jacob would be like a person with a fat body that wasted away (v. 4). The destruction of Damascus was fulfilled in history and prophecy.

Armageddon Theology vs. Evangelical Covenantalism

The criticism of Futurism's "Armageddon Theology" is widespread because of its socio-political or religio-political implications:

A large group of Protestant fundamentalists and evangelicals believe in Armageddon theology. That theology is based on three passages in the Bible. One is in Revelation 16:16, which is supposed to predict a final battle at a place called Armageddon, where God would destroy the world. Those who believe this have also chosen another Bible passage, Ezekiel 38-39. In these chapters, there is reference to Gog of the country of Magog, which is far to the north and is assumed to be Russia. One passage, Ezekiel 38:15-16, speaks of many peoples, "all of them riding on horses, a great host, a mighty army... [who] will come up against my people Israel.... A few verses later God says, "I will rain upon him and his hordes and the many people that are with him torrential rains and hailstones, fire and brimstone." According to Armageddon theology, this is a description of a nuclear holocaust. This prophecy is obviously an anachronism in the 21st century, because the weapons in Chapter 39 are not bombs, missiles, tanks, and artillery, but "shields and bucklers, bows and arrows, hand-pikes and spears." Nevertheless these religious fundamentalists, who believe every word in the Bible to be inerrant, are 12somehow comfortable assuming that Ezekiel's exact catalogue is a description of modern war.[25]

Stephen Sizer in his text, Zion's Christian Soldiers? criticizes his Evangelical counterparts for their embrace of a "prophetic Israel" and the pseudo Bible prophecy they trumpet. Various Christian - some Futurist Premillennial Evangelicals – would label him and those who celebrate his theology as clear supercessionism-style or replacement theology-style eschatology. Those who have critiqued Sizer's eschatology demonstrate their impassioned theological construct - a sample will suffice:

Zion's Christian Soldiers? ought to be on the required reading list for all students of the Bible. Here is basic and fundamental methodology which challenges many evangelical assumptions about "end time’s prophecy." Here is a sound-minded, Christ-centered critique of a popularly accepted but nonetheless fatally flawed perspective that leads to many spiritual dysfunctions. If you find yourself troubled by saber-rattling political rhetoric coming from many pulpits, Zion's Christian Soldiers will reacquaint you with the Prince of peace. (Greg Albrecht, President of Plain Truth Ministries, and Editor-in-Chief, The Plain Truth magazine (author of Revelation Revolution & Bad News Religion).

Thank God, here comes at last a book that challenges the pseudo-theology which, by giving precedence to the Old Covenant over the New, relegates the Church to the status of concubine in order to make Israel the Bride of Christ. In clear and measured terms, the author demonstrates from Scripture that God's purposes for history are not driven by a narrowly selective racist obsession but rather by his eternal design to create the Church, the new community dearly secured through the cross for all Christ-followers, both Jews and Gentiles. (Professor Gilbert Bilezikian, Professor Emeritus, Wheaton College and a founding leader of Willow Creek Community Church, South Barrington, Illinois, (author of The Liberated Gospel, Beyond Sex Roles, Christianity 101 and Community 101)

In this very readable new work, Anglican vicar Stephen Sizer offers a biblically-based interpretation of the relationship of Israel and the Christian church. Turning to the current upsurge of Christian Zionism, Sizer examines its deeply flawed misreading of key biblical texts and its troubling public-policy implications. Not only Sizer’s fellow evangelicals, but everyone interested in this vital topic, will find Zion’s Christian Soldiers? an illuminating and highly valuable study.” (Professor Paul S. Boyer, James Pinckney Harrison Visiting Professor at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., and editor-in-chief of The Oxford Companion to American History (Oxford University Press, 2001).[26]

The struggle between supercessionism-style Covenantalism and various forms of hyper-Dispensationalism over any future "prophetic wars" runs deep and acerbic in its rhetoric - both sides profess Evangelical fervor and both sides are keenly aware of the implications of their belief systems.
