Rise or Fall of American Empire?

Doug Krieger

1“We cannot leap into world government in one quick step.  [This objective] requires a process of gradually expanding the range of democratic cooperation, a widening, step by step, stone by stone, [of] existing relatively narrow zones of stability. The precondition for eventual globalization—genuine globalization—is progressive regionalization, because thereby we move toward large, more stable, more cooperative units." (Zbigniew Brzezinski, State of the World Forum, San Francisco, October, 1995)

“The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast.  These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast.  These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful” (Revelation 17:12-14).

These geopolitical configurations are much more realistic insofar as Gentile World Powers “giving their authority” to the Beast “for one hour” at the close of the age than the traditional Roman Empire revival themes adhered to by most evangelical Premillenarians since the days of Benjamin Wills Newton, colleague to J. N. Darby.  Newton asserted in 1859 – later building upon his theme - that the Revived Roman Empire would be the fertile soil of the last day’s Antichrist.  To stretch this “reality” Newton had to propose the absurd notion that Islam was but a branch of decadent Christendom and amply qualified as the final geographical apostasy – bringing ancient Eastern and Western sectors of the Roman Empire 2

together for the final Seventieth Week of Daniel’s prophecy. (See:  Babylon:  Its future History and Doom with remarks on the Future of Egypt and Other Eastern Countries – Third Edition, 1890 also, Prospects of the Ten Kingdoms of the Roman Empire Being the Third Series of Aids to Prophetic Enquiry, 2nd Edition Revised, 1873)

I bring these eschatological possibilities to your attention to demonstrate that the fluid propositions which have persisted until this day regarding history’s final King of Babylon, and from whence he derives his initial and final authority, have been manifold…normally, centered in the Mediterranean region but expanding of late in that the sphere of Beastly authority pervades the whole earth:  “And all the world marveled and followed the beast” (Revelation 13:3b).  Initial, in the sense that the Eleventh Horn which comes up among the Ten Horns of Daniel 7:7-8, 11, 20-22, 24-25 wherein three of these Ten Horns were uprooted to make room for “that horn which had eyes and a mouth which spoke pompous words, whose appearance was greater than his fellows” (Dan. 7:20) appears to eventually consolidate his hegemonic authority, final authority, over the Ten Horns … “for God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled” (Revelation 17:17).

Credence to America’s superiority cannot be questioned—nor, according to geopolitical strategists like Brzezinski and Kissinger – both former U.S. Secretaries of State – can that hegemonic leadership of a New World Order be challenged, especially by Russia, China or any Eurasian Islamic constellation of nations.

“Eurasia” – code word for the Middle East (and to a lesser extent, the “Stans” of the former Soviet Union, including Afghanistan) and its inherent energy resources is emphasized over and over again by bi-partisan political interests in Washington.  The U.S. presence in the Middle East is vast, permanent and must remain utterly uncontested to insure America’s world superpower status and dominance.

Although Brzezinski’s seminal work, The Grand Chessboard, was written in 1998, its declarations and analysis have been wholly substantiated and even expanded upon during the past ten years; to wit:

3“Never before has a populist democracy attained international supremacy. But the pursuit of power is not a goal that commands popular passion, except in conditions of a sudden threat or challenge to the public's sense of domestic well-being. The economic self-denial (that is, defense spending) and the human sacrifice (casualties, even among professional soldiers) required in the effort are uncongenial to democratic instincts. Democracy is inimical to imperial mobilization." (p.35)

(NOTE:  Brzezinski somehow surmounts the impediments of American democracy – making democracy a somewhat distant proposition when exceptional extremities (e.g., World Wars, Cold Wars, and the War on Terror) threaten the public’s sense of domestic well-being.   Democracy may militate against imperial mobilization but who says we’re a pure democracy in the first place?  Commercial Empire can and has been perpetuated by the world’s only super power through “Democratic Globalization” – that in spite of American patriotic trepidations to Empire, she is well able to overcome such inconvenient congenialities and reinvent herself as an Imperial Power – giving justification to her Republic’s founding and the peculiar identification it reflects upon her Roman progenitors, juxtaposed to her less philosophical democratic ideals derived from the Greeks.)

"Ever since the continents started interacting politically, some five hundred years ago, Eurasia has been the center of world power."- (p. xiii)

"It is imperative that no Eurasian challenger emerges capable of dominating Eurasia and thus of also challenging America. The formulation of a comprehensive and integrated Eurasian geostrategy is therefore the purpose of this book.” (p. xiv)

"It follows that America's primary interest is to help ensure that no single power comes to control this geopolitical space and that the global community has unhindered financial and economic access to it." (p148)

(Naturally, under American largess and financial culpability would this be sustained.  Yet, on a seemingly theological and somewhat esoteric level, an ignorance whose eschatology is steeped in Colonial European geopolitical understanding, tragically and ignorantly overwhelms Biblical interpretations. The majority of these serious-minded eschatologists have but a superficial recognition of Brzezinski’s world—and those who do, are determined to eliminate her (in that they claim America is NOT mentioned in Bible prophecy) from her pinnacle of power through nuclear exchange, economic upheaval, natural cataclysmic devastation, moral disintegration, pandemic contagion or, for the pre-tribulationist, the American New World Order System will be subsumed into a Revived Roman Empire after the devastating exodus of her Christian population via rapture—she’ll just become a member of the club.)

"America is now the only global superpower, and Eurasia (a.k.a. the Middle East and the “Stans” of the former Soviet Union—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan) is the globe's central arena. Hence, what happens to the distribution of power on the Eurasian continent will be of decisive importance to America's global primacy and to America's historical legacy." (p.194)

"Without sustained and directed American involvement, before long the forces of global disorder could come to dominate the world scene. And the possibility of such a fragmentation is inherent in the geopolitical tensions not only of today's Eurasia but of the world more generally." (p.194)

"With warning signs on the horizon across Europe and Asia, any successful American policy must focus on Eurasia as a whole and be guided by a Geostrategic design." (p.197)

"That puts a premium on maneuver and manipulation in order to prevent the emergence of a hostile coalition that could eventually seek to challenge America's primacy.  The most immediate task is to make certain that no state or combination of states gains the capacity to expel the United States from Eurasia or even to diminish significantly its decisive arbitration role." (p. 198)

"In the long run, global politics are bound to become increasingly uncongenial to the concentration of hegemonic power in the hands of a single state.  Hence, America is not only the first, as well as the only, truly global superpower, but it is also likely to be the very last." (p.209)

4"The last decade of the twentieth century has witnessed a tectonic shift in world affairs. For the first time ever, a non-Eurasian power has emerged not only as a key arbiter of Eurasian power relations but also as the world's paramount power. The defeat and collapse of the Soviet Union was the final step in the rapid ascendance of a Western Hemisphere power, the United States, as the sole and, indeed, the first truly global power.” (p. xiii)

I’ve stated in copious repetition America’s unmitigated strategic presence and its utter persistence in the Middle East – it is uncompromised, without contradiction and interminable.  It is this uncontested experiment in Western Civilization’s prowess that is so overt, in comparison to all the world’s superficial attempts to mimic even a portion of her powers . . . yet, our beloved brethren rigidly deny her faintest reference amongst the Biblical prophets; therefore, again, she must be destroyed prior to any meaningful role she might have played if she were present in her fullness.  Likewise, Brzezinski’s remark that “global politics are bound to become increasingly uncongenial to the concentration of hegemonic power in the hands of a single state” appears contradictory to his impregnable thesis that America must maintain her hegemony at all costs – indeed, the nations of the earth find it repugnant to consolidate such leadership; however, it is convenient if they monetarily benefit from her management.

Either the God of the whole earth delights to keep such nations like Egypt, Syria and Israel first and foremost in the prophetic unfolding, whereas the Divine Intent appears to obscure the immensity of the obvious at the close of the age – so convinced of this obscurity are those who embrace Israel’s materiality as the sine qua non of the Second Coming; therefore, since America is not mentioned in Bible prophecy, her immediate demise and subsequent departure from Eurasia is imminent … notwithstanding the obvious conclusions of Brzezinski to the contrary:

"For America, the chief geopolitical prize is Eurasia... Now a non-Eurasian power is preeminent in Eurasia - and America's global primacy is directly dependent on how long and how effectively its preponderance on the Eurasian continent is sustained.” (p.30)

"America's withdrawal from the world or because of the sudden emergence of a successful rival - would produce massive international instability. It would prompt global anarchy." (p. 30)

"Two basic steps are thus required: first, to identify the geostrategically dynamic Eurasian states that have the power to cause a potentially important shift in the international distribution of power and to decipher the central external goals of their respective political elites and the likely consequences of their seeking to attain them;... second, to formulate specific U.S. policies to offset, co-opt, and/or control the above..." (p. 40)

And, in case you are recalcitrant enough to blithely assume that your Bible intends to reduce America via rapture or other socio-economic calamity to the trash bin of history – take one last look at these profundities written by this secular prophet:

"To put it in a terminology that harkens back to the more brutal age of ancient empires, the three grand imperatives of imperial geostrategy are to prevent collusion and maintain security dependence among the vassals, to keep tributaries pliant and protected, and to keep the barbarians from coming together." (p.40)

"Henceforth, the United States may have to determine how to cope with regional coalitions that seek to push America out of Eurasia, thereby threatening America's status as a global power." (p.55)

5The 2009 edition of Terry James’ The American Apocalypse…Is the United States in Bible Prophecy? articulates the epitome of prophetic interruptus whereby the repeated acclamations of America’s world-class status are rehearsed, along with her vacuous absence in Bible prophecy.  James gets real close to admitting the good ‘ole USA sure “sounds” like it may be, just a little bit, oh so close, enshrouded, perhaps, in obscurity, or maybe a veiled allusion to her whereabouts, somewhere here or there in the Bible…but there’s a good reason why she’s really not mentioned, at all, sort of.

Actually, after digesting this premillenarian, pretribulational account of the end of the world as we know it, I am convinced that the 800-pound gorilla, known as Sam, as in Uncle Sam, constitutes an insurmountable barrier that cannot go unnoticed – so, one of the heaviest guns of the Pre-Trib Research Center (cofounded by Dr. Tim LaHaye of the Left Behind Series fame), Terry James, is determined, in his apparent conflicted writing style, to convince the reader that the reason America is NOT mentioned in Bible prophecy (although there appears to be a preponderance of obvious allusions thereto) has everything to do with the fact that Antichrist must ascend from a Ten-Nation European Confederacy, and America via rapture must be demoted to a egalitarian status amongst the nations of a Revived Roman Empire.

Of interest to this author is the survival of America, after the rapture, to the status of one of the ten—obviously, she’s moving up the geopolitical ladder in Terry’s thesis.  No, not quite the formidable super power dominating Eurasia described by Brzezinski, but a sconce improved over Hal Lindsey’s “America doesn’t even play a bit part in Bible prophecy.”  Let’s take a closer look at the evolution of premillenarian thinking regarding America’s obscurity in Bible prophecy….

First, James goes into effusive recognition of America’s accomplishments and world domination:

“No nation in modern times stands more at stage-center than the United States.  None in all of recorded history has had more influence or has more directly affected countries contemporary to its time of nationhood than America.  Its contributions to moving the world from the speed a horse can run to light speed through near-instantaneous communications technologies are staggering…there is no peer to American creative industrial genius when considered in context of civilization-enhancing contributions by all generations prior to the twentieth century.  The United States of America, as a result of her genius and industry, stands alone as the most materially endowed nation-state ever.” (p. 13)

James makes a point that America’s eruption upon the world scene bore with it at least two primary purposes:  (1) Through her technology she would be used as a “golden cup in the hand of the Lord” (a clear allusion to prophetic Babylon) to deliver the gospel to the nations; and (2) to act as mid-wife to the State of Israel.

Indeed, in so stating this, James asserts:

“The United States, in my view, is key to Israel’s fortunes from this point until Christ’s return at Armageddon…America’s influence, from its conception, is supernaturally imprinted upon the final act of history.” (p. 23)

“From a human standpoint, America is the key to Israel’s future.  That relationship causes the geopolitical world to quake with anxiety over things to come.” (p. 140)

Grant it, this sounds like James may have concluded that America is mentioned by the prophets . . . but does he?  His interview on Lamb and Lion Ministries (David Reagan) confirms his occlusion of America in prophecy.  Actually, throughout his text he purposefully allows for the “shadow of America” to pass now and again without mention…but it appears as if the shadow has substance.  He is, on the one hand, adamant that “To repeat:  The United States is mentioned nowhere in Bible prophecy” (p. 224) but prior to that repetition he states:  “America, who holds the keys to one world order, must be circumvented or be caused to give in to the relentless assault on national sovereignty” . . . for that’s the only way she can stay OUT of Bible prophecy?

6The nigh ambivalence towards America’s exclusion bewilders . . .

“Still others believe references to the Babylon scheduled for future destruction might refer to the United States (p. 194) … Are rearrangements underway that will allow a consortium of nations to supersede America’s position as overseer in the (Middle East) region? (p. 199) … America, firmly ensconced in Iraq, is at the very center of this movement back to Babylon.  In effect, the United States seems to fit the description in Zechariah’s prophecy (Zechariah 5:5-11) of the base upon which this basket full of worldwide wickedness will sit.” (P. 207)

Is he on foot or horseback?  She is but she isn’t…

“America, the golden cup in the Lord’s hand for more than two centuries—having disseminated the gospel to the world, and having been the midwife of Israel’s birth into modern times, then its protector—is not mentioned in Bible prophecy by name.  However, supposedly lesser nations of history are mentioned such as Persia (present-day Iran), Syria, and others.  Russia fits into the region known in ancient times as the area that Scripture calls “Rosh.” (Note:  This author wholly disagrees with this erroneous interpretation in that Rosh simply means Chief and has nothing to do with the Gog-Magog invasion in Ezekiel 38-39.)  But this once-shining city on the hill called America is nowhere to be found as the very end of days unfold.” (p. 82)

And, when it comes to the world’s “peace leadership” – and the allusions to the “Man of Peace” – the Antichrist – who through craft shall orchestrate the peace with Israel’s majority (“the many”) and thereby commence the Seventieth Week of Daniel’s prophecy (Daniel 9:27), James makes the obvious and immediate recognition:  “America, which is at the center of all crucial global matters today, is at the heart of this quest to find peace—particularly peace that will disarm the trigger to World War III.” (p. 225)

Following up this observation, James continues… “Nothing is more apparent, as evidenced by things concerning the Roadmap to Peace (Note:  Championed by the USA all the way!)…than the fact that we are living in the middle of the prophesied end-time peace process.” (p. 231) – of course, once again, America is not mentioned in Bible prophecy and certainly will have little or nothing to do with the enforcement of the Defense Pact/Treaty of Peace between Antichrist and Israel as so forecasted and agreed upon by James and many other dear brethren who see nothing of America’s mention in Bible prophecy. (Ref. Daniel 9:27 and Isaiah 28:15-18)

7But, wait a minute – if America is at the helm of the peace movement, and she is the “whorish mistress’s lover (of) the beast” (p. 253) and furthermore:  “Plainly, the evidence shows that America is at the heart of the formative stages of the end-of-days false worship system” . . . so why then this caveat:  “Why, then, is the United States not mentioned in Bible prophecy?” (p. 253)

Answer:  Why is the yellow house painted yellow when it’s not yellow?  The logic transcends normal human understanding!  I’m sure someone in philosophy has a description of this phenomenon going on here.  Nevertheless, America once the “golden cup in the hand of the Lord” is NOW but a has been among the nations:

“…America has been a true witness to the whole world.  The nation has served its purpose.  That is a chilling thought, isn’t it?  America has—the emphasis is on the past tense—served her purpose.  That statement has an ominous ring to it; as repeated throughout these pages, America is mentioned no place in bible prophecy.” (p. 259)

A final rap (as in “rapture”) explains, according to James, just why there is no mention of America in Bible prophecy – she’s “all over the place” but nowhere to be found; to wit:

“America, the most glorious nation in history so far as her material contribution to modernity is concerned, seems nowhere in view.  On the other hand, a strong case can be made that the United States is still present with her influence.  It is the vast body of technology—the majority of which America has invented, produced, and disseminated—that has ‘given power and authority unto the beast’ as prophesied in the ten-kingdom reference in Revelation 17:12-13.”

“No doubt, as stated before, it is America’s nuclear arsenal and the unmatched ability to deliver the horrific warheads to anywhere at any time that puts the exclamation point upon the Antichrist’s capability to cause all the world to worship him or be killed (Revelation 13:16).”  (Note:  Whoops – America not only provides the religious “base” found in Zechariah 5, but now her nuclear arsenal and delivery systems enable Antichrist’s empowerment!)

“Perhaps those who say Babylon is a reference to America in end-times prophecy are right to some degree (Note:  This includes David Wilkerson and a growing number of proponents such as myself.)  Again, Jeremiah 51:7 says, ‘Babylon hath been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, that made all the earth drunken:  the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad…it is a tragedy of the worst sort to consider:  The blessings bestowed upon our nation turned to cursing in the sense of her god-inspired technological wonders being put at the disposal of the final führer.” (pp. 287-8)

Thus, at the close of the age America gets into “power sharing” – Brzezinski undoubtedly awaits that day!  Is Terry James conflicted?  Yes and no – both (a classic American response to such a question).  He rigidly holds to Lindsey’s “not even a bit part” but teeters on the edge of full-blown “prophetic pregnancy” – either she is or isn’t – but in the world of Terry James she jolly well could be “half-pregnant” and dumbfound the casual observer – but wouldn’t it be a huge surprise to deliver twins and not even know you were pregnant? (There’s actually a special series on American television which dramatizes the “I never knew I was pregnant phenomenon.”  Of course, the question lingers:  How could she not know she was pregnant?  I mean, TWINS!  Good grief!)

“God removed Lot, and His wrath began to fall upon that wicked, ungovernable people.  Jesus indicated that this is exactly what will happen near the time He comes again (Note:  Jesus NEVER predicted a “secret rapture” or a rapture seven-years prior to his advent.).  It will happen at the rapture, at least seven years before He comes back and touches down on the Mount of Olives.  The first part of God’s wrath will be the removal of His Holy Spirit from the consciences of earth-dwellers  (Note:  Pray tell “on earth” then could the consciences of “a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands” – the very ones identified as “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb” (Rev. 7:9-17) – just how could these believers not be convicted by the Holy Spirit?  Just how could this great tribulation multitude not be pricked in their consciences and turn to the Lord for salvation?  Perhaps by their own ingenuity?  Nonsense!  Unless the Holy Spirit convicts of sin and righteousness, there is no new birth – no “tribulation saint.”).  The people left behind will have rejected God’s authority… Now, raptured saints will perhaps from the balcony of heaven be given a God’s-eye view of whether the rebels’ claim that they don’t need God to govern them is true.”  (Note:  Or, better yet, these dear brethren shall attest to the prevailing power of the Lamb of God and Savior of the world in the very midst of exceeding wickedness – causing a great multitude to turn to the Lord in the time of Jacob’s Trouble – the “tribulation of those days.”)

“Millions will vanish in a millisecond.  The United States of America, which possesses at the same time more gospel light than any other nation of history and access to more filth and depravity than even ancient Rome at its decadent, orgiastic worst, will experience an implosion that staggers the imagination…America’s very soul will be gone in that stupendous second of time.  The United States will have changed in ways that will demand a profoundly different order of life.” (pp. 263-4, 267)

Hence, the title of this book:  The Rise or Fall of American Empire…the Evangelical Cover-up of America’s Role in Bible Prophecy

8Somehow, the has been victim, the United States of America, is not mentioned in Bible prophecy – and, if she were, perhaps she’s simply the “Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth” as declared by Kristie Johnson in her text:  Mystery Babylon, the Great, Defender of Israel…A Search for America in Bible Prophecy (2004) – and, to Kristie, the Beast who turns on the Harlot is based, once again, out of Europe’s Ten Confederated Nation States…

“The story of the United States of America in Bible prophecy begins in Chapters 17 and 18 of Revelation…This description of Mystery Babylon could not apply to the Apostate Church as a separate world power for which all the merchants of the world are mourning as in verse 18:11…This description fits the United States of America.  It could not be any other nation that exists today…Perhaps God has already shown His people and the world that this is the USA in the events we watched on September 11, 2001…The fulfillment of the prophecy of the destruction of Mystery Babylon may have already begun…Ezekiel 38, indicates that the United States will be caught up in a devastating war as it tries to repel an unexpected invasion by Russia and others against Israel …Whatever the final mechanics may be, when the United states is brought down by this conspiracy and warfare, there will be no one ‘who can make war with the beast.’”  (Note:  This American obsession with a resurgent Russia on the ready to destroy America when she herself (Daniel 11:44) will become the very victim of Antichrist, both puzzles and astounds – especially in light of the fact that the nation’s life expectancy has greatly decreased as a result of vodka consumption at every age level – some 2 million alcoholics – I know, there’s nothing like facing a drunken bear in a fight…sure!)

Revelation 17:12-17 explains a curious thing about Mystery Babylon, the same ten horns, ten kings, that hate the whore and destroy her, also make war with the Lamb.  The ten kings hate the whore and they also hate the Lamb of God.  Even though the scripture here exposes the vile end time vision of our nation as the whore, Mystery Babylon, we were also chosen by God for a very special and important role to act as the messenger of the gospel to the modern world and to be the restorer and protector of the nation of Israel.  For these reasons the USA will be and is hated because the blessings of God have been on this nation so abundantly” (pp. 72, 78, 80-1).

Johnson uses a similar reasoning as James regarding America’s role as “golden cup in the hand of the Lord” – (1) The spread of the gospel; and (2) Protector of Israel.  James simply puts a technological amplification to spreading the gospel.

Johnson’s reasoning amazes:

9“If the woman (Johnson’s USA) is sitting on, and dominating the Beast (or Antichrist government), then the woman will have to be thrown off or destroyed before the Beast can come to power.” (p. 81)

Her remarks presuppose that (a) the Woman dominates the Beast; and (b) the Beast has not yet come to exclusive power in that the Woman who sits atop dominates.

But, in point of Scriptural fact – the Beast has already come to power prior to the woman’s destruction (Revelation 17:11-13).  The Antichrist-Beast has already bequeathed authority to the Ten; so this business of the Beast receiving authority from the Ten is nonsensical—the Beast gives them authority for one hour.

Furthermore, “Religious Babylon” is indeed destroyed by the Ten Horns which sit atop the Beast:  “and the ten horns which you saw on the Beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire” (Revelation 17:16).  Yes, she is that “great city which reigns over the kings of the earth” (Revelation 17:18) but she is ALSO the Commercial Babylon which is destroyed in Revelation 18 – this distinction is lost in Johnson’s configurations – likewise, she has unwittingly assumed that the Woman, the Harlot, the Whore of Babylon dominates the Antichrist-Beast – no, the Beast simply uses her for “moral covering” – as has always been the case and cause of ecclesial interference in the affairs of state.

Ah, but I must admit, I do appreciate this dear sister’s boldness to condemn the Harlot’s insidious defilements.  Likewise, her post-tribulationist persuasions are refreshingly out front and personal:

“Read again Rev. 18:4-6…This passage of scripture shows that God’s people are in Mystery Babylon right up to and until her judgment is coming.  But they are warned not to remain in her or they will also be judged.  It also says that she has harmed God’s people, and that she should receive double what she has done to onto (sic) them.  As this points to a time yet further into the future, it appears that even in the USA, Christians will be the object of persecution of some kind before the final judgment of the nation.” (p. 93)

Johnson simply has a patriotic twist in her that refuses to face the geopolitical fact that the King of Babylon, the Willful King, the Eleventh Horn, the Antichrist-Beast, actually ascends as both a King and a Kingdom out from the Ten Horns and that it is he who gives authority to the Ten Horns for one hour.

I can understand, perhaps not appreciate, the passion that American Christians have for the Babylon of the Last Days as the Mother of Harlots – this sounds and is a rather conflicted confession, isn’t it?  “Liberty and justice for all” does have a rather alturistic ring to it—but watching the Mother of Harlots getting kings and all the nations of the earth “drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication” really doesn’t sound all that charming.  On the one hand we broadcast the gospel – on the other hand, we are the purveyors of 89% of the world’s porn.  We, in and of ourselves, are a Tale of Two Cities … but it’s hard to let the dream die; difficult to witness and concur as to her future burning and the Monster who will orchestrate her demise …forbid his whereabouts stands glaring us in the face!

In this precarious effort – our beloved George Barna makes one last stand for American revival and, quite frankly, resuscitation in his most recently acclaimed work:  The Seven Faith Tribes…Who they Are, What they Believe, and Why they Matter (2009).  A New America must galvanize around moral platitudes, coalesce around the common good, while laying aside our strident differences – getting along must take precedent over our doctrinal divisions at any cost if we are to be the world’s moral leader.

10Barna trumpets a New America, where our national identity, ideology, community, leadership – all is NEW!  We keep the old – we support the new – tried and tested “values” should not be thrown away…Barna’s “faith tribes” (Casual-Laodicean-style Christians, all 150 million of them; 39-million Captive Christians who actually believe what the Bible says; Jews who ascribe to certain moral traditions; 5-million Mormons who believe the book of Mormon and sometimes the Bible; Pantheists who believe everything and “Spiritual Skeptics” who have a hard time believing anything; and, of course, Muslims who believe the Koran) must cling to their peculiarities but realize we have far more in common that represents the New America, than we have in our doctrinal distinctions.  We hold to our exclusivities of faith, while punctuating our moral compatibilities.  America’s future is at stake… “That future can best be advanced by the efforts of our faith tribes…Play your role in the process to help restore vitality to America.  Your life, and that of millions of other people, will be the better for it.” (pp. 205)

Barna is perhaps one of the most quoted evangelical demographers in the world, certainly in North America – it’s hard not to love George Barna, after all, what say we of his clarion call?

“If the United States is to enter its fourth century as a strong and enduring nation, it must embrace and embody the selfless values that carried the country through its first two-plus centuries of freedom and fulfillment.  We are indeed a resilient nation, but if we insist on shedding communal sensibilities in favor of personal liberty and self-satisfaction, we will experience an agonizing demise.  If, however, we remember that there is a greater good, indeed a higher calling, that we can collectively achieve, we can effectively contribute to making our nation and the entire world a better place…Faith, shared values, compassionate and empathetic dialogue, visionary leadership, healthy families—these are the components of restoration that must be harnessed for the common good.  We have the capacity.  Will we use it?” (p. 27)

Barna does not, per se, have any substantive end-time vision of America – he sees her restoration to greatness as a visionary discovery of who we are in our greater community wherein a multiplicity of faith-based entities somehow awaken to their community capacity building in a final effort, predicated on historic resilience and traditional moral commitments which uplift her common good over her “plagues and sins” – lest her demise and ultimate fall from grace becomes her common lot with empires past.

11I wish him well and will do my bit part in his schematic, much like the little Dutch boy with finger in dike – but know full-well this “golden cup in the hand of the Lord” has seen her day in the sun – the age of resilience is over.  Barna, James and Johnson all have a world view of America and her end-time role (although Barna’s forestallment of the inevitable is a valiant effort – a shot in the darkness of our night).

This voluminous effort – The Rise or Fall of American Empire? – The Evangelical Cover-Up of America’s Role in Bible Prophecy – is so intensely peculiar, yet way overdue amongst Barna’s Captives, even Casual Christians – let alone a few Mormons thrown in for good measure – really, would to God that a Pantheist or Skeptic might awaken to the tsunami arriving upon our shore and “do something about it” – like, get real with God Almighty!  And, for the Jew, well, their lot is cast by God Almighty Himself – need I say more?  Finally, for the Muslim adherents – God is not through with you yet (that’s meant in a good way).

Why have I exhausted myself upon this topic has everything to do with the preparation of the Bride of Christ – the real WOMAN of Revelation 12 and 21.  I fully realize that I have sounded nauseatingly skeptical of my compatriots amongst the premillenarian evangelicals – condemning them for their obfuscations of America’s final role in Bible prophecy in that their conflicted views of her devolution and diminishment are not only contrary to Scriptural intent, but leave the people of God starkly exposed to the deception and falling away from the faith so forecasted prior to Antichrist’s unveiling.

Terry James, along with most of the pretribulationists, grossly misinterprets the final prophetic amplifications to occur in the latter days—a prophetic outburst leading to much greater understanding of apocalyptic Scriptures:

Daniel 12:4…the prophecies of Daniel were to be ‘sealed,’ that is, to remain a closed book, but little understood, ‘even to the time of the end,’ but then, say the versions, ‘many shall run to and fro,’ a non-consequential idea, disconnected from anything in the vision, and that has given rise to such an irrelevant notion as that the angel pointed to trains, motor-cars, and aeroplanes which would bring about the modern half-insane, restless rushing hither and thither (Please see p.41 of Terry James’ American Apocalypse, Chapter 1, The Explosion.).  The real sense, however, is: ‘Many shall pursue the book’ (Variorum); ‘many shall diligently investigate’ (Darby); ‘many shall read and review the book’ (Pierson); ‘many shall scrutinize the book from end to end’ (Tregelles); ‘many shall search it through and through’ (Pember), and so ‘knowledge of it’ shall be increased.’”

“That this process of enquiry, and this result, to come at the time of the end, have been seen during the past hundred years beyond any former time is certain.  And such search is now legitimate, for Christ has, as it were, broken the seal from this prophecy by saying concerning the ‘abomination’ here mentioned, ‘let him that readeth understand’ (Matt. 24:15).” (G. H. Lang, The Histories and Prophecies of Daniel, Paternoster Press, 1950, pp. 181-2)

Yes, America is smack dab in the middle of prophetic happening – no veiled allusions are necessary.  Her glaring descriptions cannot be submerged in the clever word-speak of countless prophetic scribes – most of whom are Americans – nor can her cradle escape the discovery of him who ascends from the abyss!

Today, the USA is on the brink of economic chaos – leading to the time wherein to buy and sell without the MARK shall be altogether stressful and incomprehensible.  Her relentless proclivity to project her armies throughout the globe in order to sustain her economic advantage abides unrestrained - uncompromised…the American New World Order System is entrenched, impregnable…she will NOT let go, regardless of the cost in lives and spiraling debt…what awaits is a further entrenchment of America’s globalization which appears as the pervasion of a one-world currency to which all the world’s currencies shall become subservient…so is the economic significance of the Mark of the Beast.

Those daring to resist shall suffer greatly and many will pay the uttermost price – but in the end, there is this three-fold triumph to them who overcome Babylon’s insidiously religious apostasy, commercial exploitations and corrupted political system:

“Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast (political Babylon) or his image (religious Babylon), and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands (commercial Babylon).  And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years” (Revelation 20:4).

May we all embrace the “Book of Truth” (Daniel 10:21) and “search anxiously through the Book” so that the “knowledge of God’s purposes as revealed by His prophets shall be increased and become great” at this “time of the end.” (Daniel 12:4).  The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit…Grace be with you.  Amen (II Timothy 4:22)
